Magic trick

Week 13

14 to-dos: 9 done, 5 untouched

My brain likes to play tricks on me. At the end of a day, or a week, or a quarter, instead of seeing all that I accomplished and got done, I focus on the undones, the “I didn’t get to that”s. This kind of thinking isn’t helpful and is clearly not positive.

A perfect example is looking at this week – before I sat down to write this blog post I was so frustrated with myself for not getting the wedding invitations I designed posted on my Etsy shop. I was exasperated with myself for not working on my book. I was disheartened I didn’t get to enjoy my creative side and take time to scrapbook. In fact, I could rattle off all the things I didn’t get to easily.

How to combat this negativity and downward spiral? My magic trick is actually in the form of list making. I use a program called Asana to write out all my goals and then to keep track of them each week. When I go back and then look at the week and assess, that’s when the magic happens. I can see – I got 9 items checked off my list!

I was able to complete 30 days of Yoga which helped me reach my yoga goal this week. I actually managed to finish my 15th Masterclass this quarter! (It was down to the wire, but I learned so many interesting things I never would have been exposed to without this crazy goal.)

My checklists end up being my reality check: you’ve got this and you can keep achieving all sorts of goals even when it’s a crazy week. And it’s ok if I didn’t get every single goal 100% done. What’s your magic trick to bring you back to reality when you get hard on yourself?
